RTM and Retail

What is the difference between RTM and the final release apart from having
different checksums and having all the drivers install correctly on the
retail?
 
rtm ( aka "the golden build") = "released to manufacturers", state of which
a software is frozen and produced.

You are clever enough to think what this words describes, yes ?

No difference except the RTM version will install a few updates when it is
installed on a system.

Huh? So you mean that the Retail disks include updates released after RTM?

The retail and OEM versions of Vista just released are RTM.
RTM = Release To Manufacturing.
The checksums, drivers etc are identical since they are the same.

The OEMs have the same RTM code as the retail but the OEMs can customize
theirs.

Same NOT the same as the Retail disks then? I was just trying to make sure
that they were the same or not.

Right now RTM and retail are the same.
Once a Service Pack is released, the then currently shipping DVDs will
include the Service Pack.
As for now, Retail is the same as RTM., or we should really say Gold.

I had the impression that SP1 for Vista is reasonably far off though --
sometime next year...
 
Rumor has it SP-1 is due the end of the year with the release of Longhorn
Server also rumored to be called Windows Server 2007.

I guess I should have explained that better. All I meant was that when you
install RTM , it will look for any available updates and install them. The
same as any version of Windows during installation. I didn't mean that there
was any difference between RTM and Retail.
