Not sure why things are going wrong, but the only way I could get the
installation to go through was to remove my Sapphire Theatre550 tuner card.
No problems with my old motherboard (Asus P5LD2-VM), RC1, and the same
tuner.

Symptoms are that immediately on boot-up, when the funky green bar starts
animating, my system locks up before it fully displays the progress bar. No
disk activity, left it running for several minutes with no changes.

So I pulled the card, finished the installation. Got things set up and
running, life seems good. Plug in the card, try starting Vista, same thing.
Unplug the card, no problems.

Anyone else having similar problems and found a solution? I've seen a
couple other postings in forums, but no real solutions yet. All this works
just peachy keen in XP.

I bought the ATI 650 because it is supposedly "Vista Ready" but it caused
Vista RC2 to blue screen everytime. (I wonder what ATI means by "Vista
Ready?")

I just installed RTM x64 and I did not even bother to install the 650 since
ATI still does not have a Vista driver for the 650. However, they have a
driver for the 550 so you may want to try it from the ATI site.

I can't get to the point to install a driver. It locks up before I get into
Vista. I guess I could try installing the driver without the card, or
booting into safe mode (does that still exist?) and install the card from
there.

Never mind about the "safe mode" thing; found that. Next time I feel like
taking my machine apart, I'll try playing with that, and finding out where
it's locking up.

Just to follow up; I found a new BIOS flash file (1705) on one of the Asus
forums, and it allowed me to boot into Vista with the card installed. I get
nothing but static from any of the channels, but at least I can boot with it
in there.

And now, with the latest ATI Theatre 550 drivers for XP, I can get video...
Slowly getting there.
