I'm after suggestions please.
I have tried / downloaded the following: Feedreader, Jyte, Jaeger,
Tristana, Novobot, Blogbridge, BottomFeeder, Awasu, Abilon, EffNews,
RSSOwl, Amphetadesk, Tristana, Pears, Sage (FF ext.)

What I would like is:
* Freeware
* that would use Firefox as the default browser
* desktop, not online (no ads thankyouverymuch)
* must run in the systray
* 'paned' display if possible
* must NOT use .NET

I'm out of places to look now ... any suggestions ?

Thanks

Since you're using Firefox, why don't you use the Sage extension?
It's simple and light.

Have you tried Bloglines? This free webware is much better than any of
the available freeware applications, and there are no ads.

I would rather have a desktop program that I control. I've heard good
things about bloglines, but for now, online is not what I want.

I have used that too, and RSS Reader panel before it.
With a large rss list, it's annoying to have to set individual
properties, and the choice of either the icon changing, or effectively a
splash note wasn't uuseful enough.
I was also being told by it that a site had been updated and on
visiting, it had not.

Thanks for reading my post anyway :)

I didn't think that what I was after would be so hard to find, but
apparently such a reader does not yet exist - and since I posted I have
tried a number of others too.
Maybe I'm just being ridiculous about not wanting .NET, but as my
machine manages everything just fine right now (no SP2 near me yet), I
don't see why I need to download 20meg of m$ stuff that isn't geared to
one job, but a variety about which I know little or nothing.

Oh well.. I've got Sage back up again, but I'll keep an eye out.

if you want a regular exe type program you can get the source code for an
rss reader from planet source code. just keep in mind that all rss readers
have to go online sometime to gather the news.

Mosty probably because the site owner "updated" it without really changing
the contents...

IIRC the next version of Thunderbird will have an RSS reader built-in.

Hi Podz - Not to especially encourage you to dl .Net framework, but you
might think of it as MS's answer to Java (although it's really quite a bit
more than that), and as something that you'll probably need at some point in
the future anyway as more developers shift over to it (as likely they will).
