How do I configure the host PC (running WinXP Pro) to be
able to continue viewing the desktop even while a remote
user is logged in. pcAnywhere allows the host user to
know when a remote user is logging in. Is this possible
in Remote Desktop?

It isn't, in the current situation.

There is a separate feature, which requires XP on both ends, and requires an
interactive user on both ends, called Remote Assistance, which allows for
this, but may also not be well suited to your desired use.

I hear there is a beta service pack that allows this with RD (not only RA). Is this true? Does anyone have info on getting that and trying it

Thanks

You will need Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2003 Server to have more than
one active session, both product are available today, as for the beta
service pack, you can try https://www.beta.microsoft.com

I'll give the standard answer...

Functionality that is proposed to be included in service packs are
subject to change at any time and may or may not be included in the
final release version...
