RPM mismatch of Harddisks

I have Mercury ZX98-AT mother board with 10GB Harddisk
of Seagate part no. ST310212A which is of 5400 rpm.
I want to upgrade this to 40GB HDD which is of 7200 rpm.
I want to know if this new disk will work with the mother board.

Bus speed is 100MHz. Processor is Pentium III , 550 MHz.
Motherboard information says that it will support >32GB.

Does 7200 rpm have any effect ?

No, RPM is a function of the HD itself, your mobo has no idea what RPM *any*
HD is capable of, nor does it matter. 32GB is a known limitation of some
older mobo's, but if your mobo manual indicates >32GB is supported, I have
no reason to doubt it. It may require a BIOS update in some cases. Btw,
usually the next hurdle is >127GB or so.

Even if the mobo manual was wrong, or let's say it required a BIOS update
but you couldn't locate one, it's no big deal. All you do is visit eBay and
get yourself a Promise Ultra100 TX2 PCI controller card for $10-20, problem
solved. Heck, when these larger HDs were introduced several years ago, they
use to supply them w/ this PCI card FREE. The manufacturers knew there
would be lots of people w/ mobo limitations that prevented fully utilizing
them. So they circumvented the problem by including the PCI card in the
HD's retail box. Of course, as time has passed, they've stopped the
practice, assuming most people now have mobo's that support very large HDs
using the on-board IDE channels. If you have a problem, nothing stops you
from grabbing one of these PCI controllers off eBay for yourself.

No, 7200 RPM does not matter. The relevant detail was the
support of sizes >32GB, which your claims to support so this
new drive should work fine.

Yes, it'll work without a problem, but, I doubt the ATA 100 is eve
being met. That would depend on your bus speed. It'll work fine
