"The shoemaker's children go barefoot."

Also block outbound TCP and UDP on port 69 on firewalls....

I'm running Windows 2000 with SP2 and since August 11, a day ago with no
reason at all (no software or hw changes) I started getting this crash.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event ID: 7031
Date: 12-08-03
Time: 12:45:17 AM
Description:
The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly. It has
done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000
milliseconds: Restart the service.

Okay, so it restarts only to crash again... and again... and again. Some KB
article said that this is a problem that has only been fixed in SP4 but I've
never experienced it before. I fear faulty hardware, because svchost crashes
with <<the memory could not be "read">> messages.

Never mind, I've found the cause of the problem

And to think I always advise my friends to keep up to date on security
issues and use an antivirus.
