Hello. I've got a pretty "simple" question for you. I've
read through my MCSE books but I was unable to find the
answer. How important is RPC for win2k's ability to work
in a network environment/solely? For instance, what would
happen if I do a net stop rpc?

Cheers,

Here is a link to MS site and what the various services are for. You can also find
out more about a service by going to Computer Management/services and looking at the
dependencies list for the service [loads are dependant on rpc which make it a vital
service]. Microsoft provides excellent free guides that show how to secure a computer
by locking down services. I recommend you read the Windows 2000 Security Hardening
Guide for more information. You will find MCSE guides extremely lacking on security
topics. If you want to learn more but the fairly new Windows Security Resource

don't do it, I stopped the service because it was hanging
another process and because so many other services are
dependent upon it you will completely hose your system.
I am trying to figure a manual work around because now
every time I restart I have to manually edit the rpcss in
the registry before I can start any other service(spooler,
routing, installer, etc.).
