I have been having trouble with my computer right after
getting the internet.
Five minutes (approx) after I hook up my modem so I am
connected to the internet, my computer displays the
message:
The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated
unexpectedly.
The system is shutting down. Please save all work in
progress and log off.
Any unsaved changes will be lost.
This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.
I have no idea how to fix this. Does anyone have any
ideas?

Your issue is the result of the msblaster worm (virus) or one of
the numerous variations of that worm. This has been a well known
ongoing issue for the last four months. Is this a computer that you just upgraded
to XP and then started using on the Internet? People get infected by these particular
types of worms if
A: No firewall is enabled.
XP has a built in firewall that can be used on most Internet Connections (not AOL).
You do not mention what type of Internet Connection you are using, but if you
go to Control Panel | Network Connections -- you should be able to identify
your Network Connection icon for the Internet. Right click on that icon and then
click on "Properties". Now click on the "Advanced" tab and put a check in the
box to enable the XP Internet Connection Firewall and click OK.
B: Either no Anti Virus program is installed or an old Anti Virus program that is
no longer functioning or has not been updated with the latest virus definitions
is installed, which is essentially the same thing. You need to have an XP compatible
up to date Anti Virus program installed. However, for now, you could scan for viruses
at
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ (Hopefully you will not be plagued by the shut
down message after enabling the XP ICF) However, if that shut down message does
still appear, quickly click on START button and then RUN... link and type in: shutdown -a
and press the ENTER key on your keyboard.
C: Windows XP CRITICAL Updates have not been installed. You must get all XP CRITICAL
Updates installed by scanning for updates at:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/
