I am using Windows XP within a university network.

Over the last week my PC has started to shutdown with an
RPC error message. Now the PC tries to shutdown
immediately it starts with the same error message.

The problem seems to be described in the micorsoft
Knowledge base article 811576. Does anyone know how to
get hold of the early release copy of the fix for
Rpcrt4.dll file?

Hi,
It sounds like you have the blaster virus. There is a tool
to remove this virus at the symantec web site. Plus it is
a good idea to do the windows updates, they will help
prevent blaster from coming back. Hope this helps.

It's most likely the MSBLASTER worm. Look on the Symantec site for the
MSBLASTER worm. See URL below. You can confirm this while your
computer is up by quickly going to Start/Run, typing msconfig and
pressing enter. Look under the 'Startup' tab and there will be a
reference to MSBLAST in one of the entries. You could untick the box
while you're there so it wont start.

This page will show you how to get rid of it.

First you need to get the computer to stop shutting down.
If you're on a university site, I imagine you'd have to go through an
administrator. If you have direct access to the computer
configuration, go to Start/Control Panel/Administrative
Tools/Services. Scroll down the list till you see 'Remote Procedure
Call (RPC)'......not RPC Locator. Right click RPC and hit Properties.
Look under Recovery tab and make sure all three boxes refering to
'Failure' are set to 'Take No Action'. Be sure to hit 'Apply' and/or
'OK' before exiting the window. This will prevent your computer
shutting down with the RPC fault and allow you to contact Symantec.

There is a fix from Microsoft for this RPC problem. It is listed on
the Symantec page.

Problem is, Steve, the worm was designed to stop you accessing the net
by creating a problem in RPC. RPC is configured normally to shut the
computer down if there is an error condition in it and the computer
shuts down before you can access the net. So you first have to change
the options in RPC Services to stop the computer shutting down. I have
explained that in an accompanying reply.

You have the blaster viruse. You need to have the latest
antivirus updates, scan the hard drive and then download
and install the latest microsoft security patches to block
the virus. Cheers
