Just installed XP last night on my P4 1.6ghz generic
computer. Install went fine. However, I now periodically
get a message saying "The system is shutting down. This
shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM. Windows
must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (R\RPC)
service terminated unexpectedly." After 60 seconds, the
computer reboots. This problem seems to occur only after
I've connected to the net (56k dial-up). It is not
immediate; sometimes it happens within 20-30 seconds and
other times after several minutes. I can't identify
anything that I'm doing that triggers the message. I
reformatted the HD before installing XP and, besides XP,
have installed only Office 2003 and Earthlink Total Access
2004 software.

I was using W2K before XP and was having a similar problem
with something like the "svchost" or something like that
quitting. After it quit, I lost certain functionality
(couldn't copy/paste, couldn't disconnect from net,
etc.). I just thought it was corrupt software or
something, which is why I decided to start from scratch
with XP. Does anyone have an idea what might be causing
the problem or how to go about troubleshooting it? Many
thanks,

Phil

Apparently, your computer has an unwelcome visitor
(VIRUS) known
as the WM32 Blaster/Lovsan WORM. It only takes a split
second for
this WORM to infect your computer if a firewall is not
enabled and you
have an active internet connection.

It entered the computer through the internet connection
because the "firewall"
was not properly enabled and essential critical updates
were not installed from
the Windows Update website. For instructions on fixing
the problem, visit:

If your computer is constantly attempting to shutdown
or reboot, quickly go to:

Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
This opens the Command Prompt window.

Then type: shutdown -a , and hit enter.

This should halt the rebooting problem.

Then immediately turn-on Windows XP's built-in Firewall:
