I recently formatted my computer and re-installed it with
Win. XP Pro as a stand alone computer. When I connected
my printer to LPT1 it found it but gave me an error "The
RPC Server is unavailable" and stopped the install. I
have another USB printer that I connected and got the
same error.

When I choose "add printer" under settings I get another
error before the options even come up.

Could you please help me with this issue.

I am having the same problem....talk with hp for
hours...they could not help...any suggestions out there?

I have the same problem. I traced it back to the Print
Spooler being stopped. Print spooler needs to be started
for RPC server to function for printer installation.
Problem is that I get an error message when I try to start
Print Spooler. Must go to control panel->admin. tools-
computer management->services..scroll down to Print
Spooler and right click it. Then click Properties. Make
sure it is on Automatic and that it is started.

I got the RPC error forever. Nobody could figure it out.
I went to the page that Roger notes and followed the steps
very carefully. All fixed now. I'm ecstatic!! If your
problems started with a Lexmark printer, make sure you
read the special instructions on that. Most likely your
Print Spooler has stopped and you can't get it started.
These instructions will fix it.
