This problem has happened twice, when I was connected to
the internet. I cannot remeber the wording however a
message appeared giving me 30 seconds to suhtdown the
system. Something to do with RPC. I was downloading one
file, both times and it was the same file. ANything to do
with that?

From BTO Support:

There is currently a virus spreading across the net which basically leaves
you open to hackers by using the RPC feature of Windows NT
based systems (NT/2000/XP).

Symptoms of the virus are:

Your computer will shut itself down and then restart in order to allow the
virus to finish propogating itself

Antivirus software will NOT detect this as it is a modified version of
useful program code!

Please all ensure that you have downloaded the critical system updates

Will a system restore combat the problem? Each time it
happens some files are created and there is a log which
records these shutdowns. I have moved them to the recycle
bin. An application called "msblast"

This has nothing to do with
http://www.microsoft.com/security/security_bulletins/ms03-026.asp
I have the update ^

I really think this is causde by the one of the latest Norton Virus
Intelligent Updater or Live update. Only effects system that are Nt
based-as far as I know.

Reason, I installed interligent update. Then xp started shutting
down.

To keep the computer from shutting down.
type shutdown -a

A few bugs from stopping shutdown.
It will lock the modem. You need to power off the computer to
disconnect from the internet.

Ie will not open in new windows. You can still browser.
It will be slower.

Their may be other bugs.
