RPC Error

I have tried several times to install SP1(a) on a fresh
activated XP Home installation and get to a certain point
and I get a Remote Procedure Call termination error and
it then give me 60 seconds and kills the machine.

I had a hard time getting the machine to boot afterwards
as well and then it gave me a message that the system had
recovered from a serious error. I sent the error report
and it linked me to a support page which basically said I
had a driver fail but they couldn't tell me which one or
how. I reloaded an updated modem driver but SP1 still
fails.

Any help would be appreciated

If you connected the PC to the Internet without having first
installed the KB824146 Hotfix, without having first installed an
antivirus application with current virus definition files, and before
enabling a firewall, you're very likely to get infected from any of
the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are constantly broadcasting
the Blaster and/or Welchia worms. It only takes a few seconds of
exposure.

To stay on-line long enough to get the necessary updates, patches,
and removal tools, click Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a" when the
next RPC countdown begins. This will abort the shut down. Also, make
sure you've enabled a firewall before starting, to preclude any more
intrusions while getting the updates/patches/tools.
