Dustin

I just upgraded to Windows XP Professional and now I
can't get my laptop to run steadily. It randomly pops up
with a Remote Procedure Call error that shuts down my
computer after 60 seconds, giving me time to save my
work. I am running a Dell Latitude CPx. PIII 500mhz,
192mb RAM, 12g HD, DVD drive, and 8mb ATI Rage LT Mobile
Pro. I don't have much installed on it other then games
and a few programs that have never interfered with Win98
Or XP Home, which I previously had. I am re-installing
Windows Pro again to see if it will help but if it
doesn't, what could I do to fix this grievous error? I'm
assuming that this error has to do with networking since
it always happens when I try to do anything online.
Please direct all answers to my e-mail address as listed
so that I am assured to get them since my access is
limited except to my e-mail. Thanks in advance to all
that help. -Dustin

Before posting, it's wise to search this group. "NT Authority" or
"remote" reveal many dozens of hits, with links and tips on how to
vanquish the worm that has infested your PC.

Greetings --

If you connected the PC to the Internet without having first
installed the KB824146 Hotfix, without having first installed an
antivirus application with current virus definition files, and before
enabling a firewall, you're very likely to get infected from any of
the thousands of PCs on the Internet that are constantly broadcasting
the Blaster and/or Welchia worms. It only takes a few seconds of
exposure.

To stay on-line long enough to get the necessary updates, patches,
and removal tools, click Start > Run, and enter "shutdown -a" when the
next RPC countdown begins. This will abort the shut down. Also, make
sure you've enabled a firewall before starting, to preclude any more
intrusions while getting the updates/patches/tools.
