I was infected by the blaster worm and now when I boot I
have no task bar and some hardware is missing. I go into
services and the extended view is blank and when I try to
go into the properties of the RPC service it doesn't come
up and when I try to start the service it says it's
disabled. Any suggestions or is a format and reinstall
the only solution?

Solution #1:

Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll down to
Item No. 195 (right column), click on "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar".

Solution #2:

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307654

Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314058

Install the Recovery Console, then do the following:

Type this command into the Recovery Console:

ENABLE RpcSs SERVICE_AUTO_START

You should receive a message saying "RpcSs has gone from
SERVICE_DISABLED to SERVICE_AUTO_START, you must reboot
your computer for these changes to take effect."

Type EXIT into the Recovery Console and let your computer
reboot.

Solution #3

Remove W32.MSBlast.Worm
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_msblast.htm

If your computer is constantly attempting to shutdown
or reboot, quickly go to:

Start > Run and type: shutdown -a , and hit enter.

This should halt the rebooting problem.

Then immediately turn-on Windows XP's built-in Firewall:
