Is it possible to use the output from a windows xp machine
as the WAN input for a router. This potentially will add
one layer of firewall to the home network.

If the Windows XP machine has its own direct connection to the
Internet (dial-up, USB, or Ethernet), you can enable Internet
Connection Sharing on that connection and connect XP's local area
network connection to the router's WAN port. That would provide an
extra layer of firewall to the other computers on the home network.

However, I don't see any advantage to that over either of these
simpler options:

1. Enable XP's Internet Connection Firewall on the direct connection
to the Internet and use a network switch instead of a router to
connect XP to the LAN.

2. If your Internet connection uses Ethernet (e.g. cable modem, DSL
modem), connect it to the router's WAN port and connect all of the
computers to the router's LAN ports.
