After a disk failure, I managed to get it almost all back
together. My main computer can get to the internet through
my cable modem but my networked (p2p) computer cannot. My
main computer is the gateway. I found that "Routing and
Remote Access" service can not start. It returns this
message:

Could not start...
The service did not return an error...
This could be an internal Windows error or internal
service error.

If I knew how to reload W2K without loosing all my
settings, I would. I've never tried it and I'm chicken.
Can anybody help?

Thanks...

Hi Quacker,

There are severla known items that can cause this issue. The first I would check is to remove
any ghost devices, which based on your info, this is the most likely cause. You may have
ghosted devices because of the rebuild of the machine. So look for the ghosted devices and
remove them.

Some driver's such as Veritas backup (some versions) have caused this along with some
other software, such as from the ISP.

If you have an XP client handy, copy the msconfig.exe file from and XP machine and put on the
desktop of the server. Then run msconfig and disable all non-ms service and remove the
check mark next to load startup items. This will basically provide an almost clean boot and
then try RRAS.

In Service's right click on RRAS and make sure all the services RRAS depends on to start
are running at the time you try to start RRAS.

Hope this helps,
Gary
