Hello,
is there a method, tool or protocol to configure/observe configuration of
routers? Can I get any information from routers unauthenticated and with
some generic (not vendor specific) method?

Ondra.

You can try any freeware SNMP tool that can "Walk MIB" on a specific IP. If
the router's read-only SNMP tree is using the "public" as the access key
(this is a common default), then you should be able to do Walk MIB and at
least get some idea of how it is configured with a little patience. You
might be able to find a couple utilities that will take the "public" SNMP
data and present it somewhat formatted so that it makes more sense than the
raw data.

Most routers are programmed by either direct link (serial port on
router), telnet, or the manufacturer proprietary tool. Most high end
routers use the latter for ongoing monitoring and management.

Assuming there is a router which you legally have access to, telnet
would be a possibility. However, if you aren't legally responsible
for the router, it is hopefully password protected against your
curiosity. I would certainly hope that any router that I depend upon
is password protected. I've seen telnet router management - it
isn't for the untrained.

Depends on what you mean by the "configuration". Normally, the answer
is no. You might get some info aboput the router through SNMP, or
through ARP tables on a second router you do have access to, but if
the router is locked with a login/password that you don't have, you
can't do much about viewing the configs. Which is exactly as it
should be.
