Hi folks,
I got a curious situation with my DSL network at home; the network is:
Router ADSL digicom michelangelo
2 PCs (one with WinXP Pro, brand new, and another with XP Pro and 98)
On the new PC I have no issue, as on the old one under 98. But the old under
XP Pro is not able to obtain automatically the IP from the router. I have to
set it manually and doing this I'm able to see my home network but not to
browse the Web.

The router may be configured to only hand out IP addresses to two clients,
and falsely detecting the XP installation on the old computer as a seperate
client. You can look at the configuration of your DSL router (look for
configuration options having to do with a DHCP server) to see if that is the
case.

If the XP install on the old computer is set to automatically get an IP
address and still can not, all is not lost. Just do an "ipconfig /all" on
the XP computer that works (run it from an open command prompt so you can
see the output). Then, configure the IP settings on the old XP computer
exactly the same. The settings you will need from the new XP computer are:
Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS servers. You'll want to assign an IP
address that looks like the new XP computer's IP address, but with the
fourth number being just a little different. Adding 5 or so to the fourth
number should be a safe number to use.

The subnet mask makes sure you can properly access computers on the network,
the default gateway setting lets you get to the internet, and the DNS
servers let your computer turn www.google.com into an address it can use.

If you have any questions or need more info, reply to this post on the
newsgroup Hope this helps!

-Matt
