Router won't connect

I am running XP with a D-Link wireless router connected to my DSL modem.
I do not have a screen save setting, nor a hibernation setting.
I just have the monitor time out after 20mins.

I I don't touch the computer for a while, the monitor goes blank; that
is fine.
However, when I touch a key on the keyboard to start working, I can not
connect to the Internet. The browser and my e-mail client basically
time out.
The only way I can get going again is to power off/on the modem/router.

Is there a way to restart the connection without the power off/on
sequence, and why is this happening in the first place??

I've tried ipconfig/renew/release with no affect.
 
Has nothing to do with the computer.

The DSL is probably using PPPoE which acts like a dialup account (uses
credentials, and can "timeout"). The DSL PPPoE connection is probably timing
out and disconnecting and the Dlink box is not "redialing" properly until you
reset it. People familiar with Dlink boxes may be able to help from there,...I
cannot help with the Dlink box,..I don't (and haven't) used one of those.

OK, thanks for that.
I'm sure this did not happen before I updated the D-Link firmware, which
resets all of the settings.
It is indeed PPPoE, and there is a 'Connection Mode" setting that is set
to "Always On", which I thought told the router to somehow keep the
connection alive.
I must have missed some other setting. I'll check them all out.

That being the case, is there some other way short of powering the
router off/on? I would have thought ipconfig /release/renew would do it. No?

Well,...that's what it's supposed to do anyway :-)
I avoid PPPoE like a plague,...my DSL account does not use it.

Look for things called "keep-alives" (just a guess)

No, that is only on the PC, not on the DLink box where the problem occurs.
