I connect to my landlords 802.11b router wirelessly. Normally the
wi-fi connection works fine. Recently I switched computers.
I took the Asus WL-330g external 802.11g NIC, reset it, and all
appeared good. However, DHCP gave an IP of, IIRC, 169.x.x.x, when it
should've been 192.168.2.x, for the D-link NIC to which the Asus
adapter was attached (ipconfig showed that IP). Setting the IP
manually didn't help much.
Ok, so perhaps a problem with the adapter, so I got a linksys USB
wireless adapter. Similar results, DHCP gave an IP of 0.0.0.0
In both cases, the wireless NIC's claimed to be associated with the AP.
In both cases I could ping the IP address of the wirless NIC, after
setting up a static IP for the linksys adapter, but got "timed out"
when pinging the router. Of course, I'm only using one router at a
time, and my landlord says that the subnet mask, DNS server, default
gateway match his settings.
Today my landlord told me that the router was refusing connections, but
was vague about why. He claims it's to do with ports and implies that
it's because I'm running win2k and not winXP. He's able to bring
computers from work running winXP and connects without difficulty.
On reflection, however, I've switched the Asus adapter around before
without problems. I'll get the results of "ipconfig /all" and post
them as soon as I can.
In the meantime, assuming the problem to be with the router, any
speculation, or questions to ask of the landlord? It's an
SMC7004VWBR-CA router.
thanks,
