I have a Dlink 514 Wireless Router. I have it hard wired to three computers
and wireless to one. 98% of the time I have no issues but some stuff just
does not work threw the router for some reason.

Examples of things that will not work from any computer threw the router but
will work with the computer plugged straight into the ADSL Modem:

1) Windows updates from Microsoft \ Never Works
2) McAffe Virus update from McAfee \ Never Works
3) The search on ebay within a category \ Works sometimes
4) searches and some pictures within NewEgg.com \ Works sometimes

Is there a setting I need to change in the router or do I need to chunk the
router and buy a new one. I never had these issue with my old Lynksys non
wireless router this all started when I got the wireless on for the one
laptop.

If you had said it was an SMC, I'd blame that router right off...

Have you tried using the DMZ in your router? Basically it's the same as
plugging one PC directly into the ADSL modem, but you keep the router in
line without any firewall functionality. This test the router hardware.

Look at the settings available in the router menus. Simple
as that, anything the router is blocking or dropping should
be accessible through the menus. Unblock and allow
everything, THEN start enabling any features again.

A flaky router should not only prevent the above specific
things from working. If all else fails then see if there's
a hardware reset switch and power cycle it.

Well I managed to fix this after a lot of reading. I had to change a setting
in the router It was called "MTU's" or "Maximum Transmission Units". Don't
ask me what it is as like most of the other settings in the router I have no
clue. All I know is changing it from the factory default of 1500 to 1400
made all my issues go away.

Lots of good info at the following 'site, you might browse
around for awhile,
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/695

I read it but here is the part I do not get. The article says "Unless
otherwise set, windows defaults MTU to 1500". being that I had no idea what
an MTU was until today I can assure I have not otherwise set my PC to
anything different so why would everything work correctly with the PC
connected straight to the ADSL modem but not threw the router when they both
appear to default to 1500?

When you connect through a router, your systems are not
connecting to the internet, the router is.

WIndows PPOE may use 1480, when bypassing the router.
