A WAN port is a Wide Area Network port, think of this as the port that
connects to the internet. where as the LAN port(s) conect to the
network. the best analogy I can think of is a corded telephone with a
handset.
The plug that goes into the wall represents the WAN port where as the
plug that goes into the handset represents the LAN, the internet is the
wall and your computer is the person talking on the handset.
the information must travel up form the internt throught the WAN port,
throught the router, Out the LAN port into the computer.
in short if you re talking about a bassic home setup your DSL/Cable
modem plugs inot the WAN and the computers you want to serve
interet to plug into the LAN
