I have a SMC router connecting two XP Home computers and I am having big
problems. The Router won't connect to the internet. I phone my service
provider and they say Ihave a IP address and its the Router that is causing
the problem. I call the Router company and no help. Is there any way to fix
this myself?

First, power cycle everything: computers, modem, router. Let the modem
stay unpowered for five minutes. Bring everything back up in order:
modem (waiting until it has fully booted), router, and then computers.
See if that helps. From a command prompt, type ipconfig[space]/all.
The ip addresses should be 192.168.X.y where y is different for each
computer, and X is the same. If this is not the case, then there is a
router problem or a network setup problem to resolve.

If the IP addresses are not appropriate, then check each computer
directly connected to the modem. Make certain that each can fully
connect. If the computers connect OK, then it is time to take out the
router manual, reset the router to factory settings (however that is
done), and set it up again for the network, which should be almost plug
and play.
