My cable modem works fine when plugged straight into
computer but when I use my linksys router I can't get onto
internet. I had the router checked and it is working fine.
This same router worked fine for years. I checked the
cables and they are all ok. Any ideas? I think i have some
sort of configuration problem.

Have you tried resetting everything? Turn off the computer and also power
down both the cable modem and router. Bring the cable modem back up first,
and wait until you have a solid connection light. Then power up the router
before turning the computer back on :-)

Does your ISP use the MAC address of the network card to authenticate
users? If so, then you need to have the router "clone" the MAC address.
This can be done by going into your router setup. Click the advanced
tab, then click the MAC addr. clone tab. Enter the MAC address from the
NIC card into this field. You can find out the MAC address by going to
a command prompt in WinXP, and type "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes)
The physical address it shows under your network card is the address
you need.

I had a similar problem due to running a firewall program
(Zone Alarm Pro) on my PC - access to the internet was
being blocked by the firewall, not the router, since the
router is assigning it's own IP address to the PC. I had
to go intot the firewall and explicitly authorize the
range of allowable Linksys IP addresses to be in
the "trusted" zone.
