Router - Network subnet mask

Hi,

I've a network (1 router, 1 swith, PC, network printers, ...) with subnet
mask 255.255.255.240 defined on the router by the provider (I can not change
this on routeur). All this components have also this subnet mask.

I want to enlarge my network : I need more IP addresses.

My first idea is to change the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 on each
component, but not the routeur who have to keep 255.255.255.240.

Is my idea good ? Will this work correctly (PC's, printers, ...)? Other
idea ?

Thanks,

Jo

Assuming all devices can have fixed IPs, you should be able to change
the mask and move any devices that don't require internet access (like
printers) into the new range. If your LAN depends on DHCP, you're stuck.

You can't change the mask. It won't work.

If you need more than 14 nodes you need to create an additional
network and have one of the machines on both networks (ie it has two
nics). Then you can deal with connecting them all together by routing.

really find a good subnetting tutorial, read it 10 times and if you
understand it your sorted for anything that can ever be viewed by you as a
dilema, subnetting is a bitch!!
