Hi all, using a router to hook up 3 pc's, sharing internet also.
one cable going into the router is a crossover. all works fine, only when
all three are turned on.

*When clicking on "my network places", little search torch gif appears,
takes ages and burns out..

when I shut one pc down, I can't browse files on the network with the other
two. it only works when all three pc's are turned on.

(if i boot up with 3rd pc off), i still get freezes when trying to use "my
Network places" etc - LAN games still work between the two...

settings: Main PC connected to router = specify IP - 192.168.0.1
Other 2 pc's connected to router = obtain ip automatically

all works well only when all 3 on.

any ideas?

Do you have your router configured with IP cloning? That
is the best way to set up multiple internet access network
using the router if it's available. Let all computers
grab IP from router auto-magically.

Sounds like a netbios issue to me, that's how "My Network Places" finds the
other computers. If I'm right, one way to resolve it is to set up your
network with static IP addresses, and manually tell each of your PCs who's
on the network, so it won't have to search. That should be a simple task
given the small size of your network. It's actually a good way to go
anyway.

Before we do that, however, we can try one more thing. Try running the
Network Setup Wizard on each of your PCs. That sometimes fixes networking
problems. You might also want to remove the Internet Connection Firewall if
you're running it
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283673), which
might case these sorts of problems, to test. An internal firewall shouldn't
be necessary since you're running a NATting router anyway.

If the Network Setup Wizard and disabling the ICF didn't work, and you'd
like to try making things static, here's how I'd go about it:

Set up with static IP addresses on each of your PCs in your network. This
article should help http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=177.

Go to your Main Windows directory, then browse to \system32\drivers\etc and
find the LMHOSTS.SAM, edit this file with notepad, and add the name and IP
address of your three PCs. Then copy the file (in the same directory).
Rename the copy of the file to "lmhosts", with NO file extension. Then
reboot your PC. Copy this file to that directory on every PC on your
network, and reboot.

That should do the trick, but rest assured, even if it doesn't, it will make
things run a little smoother, though you will have to change this stuff if
you add another PC or if your ISP changes, but how often does that happen?
Let me know if that worked, I'm happy to work with you further if you need
it.
