I have bought a cheap router called a Edimax 7064+A, after my previous router gave up.

I would like some advise on the firewall. It does have a firwall and NAT but i dont seem to be able to find a way of setting any rules.

It has port forewarding, (IP filtering) ? and i was wondering if this could be used in the same way, like blocking ports 1 to 1024 inbound and some outbound, using the port forewarding (IP filtering) ability.

i have attached some screen shots if that helps.

Hi Garyten,

Port Forwarding is the term used to describe the process of allowing access to certain ports; to certain IP Addresses - allowing tight control of what accesses-what.

In your case, you can allow a Port to all addresses, as shown in https://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2750 [0.0.0.0]

Please give a little more detail as to what you're using and what you wish to achieve and I'll be more than happy to assist!

How many PC's/Laptops are connected?
Do you also have software firewalls installed? If so, which?

Thanks
Kev

Thank you, i only have the one pc connected, no other pc's or network.
I also have Kerio personal firewall on this pc.

What im trying to do, i think, is block acess to incoming on ports 1 to 1024, and outgoing except 20,21,80.

I think thats how my previous setup was configured. I only use the pc for web surfing, and dont use or host any web sites etc.

The router manual says that the firewall is of by default, an relies on NAT to provide the firewalling, however i switched it on but there doesnt seem to be any way of setting any rules, so i noticed the IP Filtering and thought that may have the same effect.

My setup is fairly basic, and i hace checked the ports using symantec and grc port scanners and all was stealth, (Kerio Switched Off)
I am just curious as to what this Firewall on this particular router is doing, as it doesnt say, other than its either on or off.
If the NAT setup is sufficient, without the firewall on, then i may accept that, i just dont really understand why the firewall is there if its not needed, and what the the difference is when its switched on or off.

I can get some more screen shots of the router setup if that helps.

Many thanks again, Gary.

Hi Gary,

Sorry about the delay!
It's probably better to take the software firewall out of the picture, until your Router is set up as desired.
Then you can further control access to your PC with the software firewall.

If the Routers firewall is on, then it usually allows HTTP and FTP by default, otherwise you wouldn't be able to do alot!

Have a play and let me know how you get on mate.

Cheers
Kev
