Router configuration problem, want internet access

I have broadband and two computers which at the present time are
independently and in turn accessing the internet, by means of cables.
I have bought a router with a non-crossover cable attaching it to the
broadband modem,
and I want access to the internet regardless of whether the other computer
is turned on or not.
Furthermore, I do not want contact between the computers or sharing of
peripherals
The configuration screens do not seem to exactly describe my «situation».
How do I go about this ?
The laptop has no diskette station, and in addition, the cd-station is
defect.

I'm not sure which configuration screens to which you refer. The router
will take care of your Internet sharing problem. Simply set up the
router and attach your two computers - wired or wirelessly - and away
you'll go. To not share anything, just don't enable File/Printer Sharing
on the computers.

You don't need a floppy drive or a CD drive to set up the router. Most
routers come with a CD and that's the easiest way to set it up; just put
the CD into the machine which has a working optical drive, connect that
machine to the router (follow the CD directions) and take it from there.

A Router would enable you to share the Internet. Sharing files between the
computers is a different setting and has nothing to do with the Router, As
long as you do not enable the File sharing in each computer there is nothing
to worry about.
Set your computers according to the instructions in the Router's manual.

Couldn't be simpler. Connect the router's WAN or Internet port to the
modem. Connect both PCs to any of the switch ports on the router. Use
regular non-crossover cables throughout. Turn them all on.

Set the PCs network adapters to get IP addresses automatically, if they
weren't. If you subscribe to cable internet... you're probably done now.

Follow the directions that come with the router for logging into it, and do
so from either one of the PCs. Choose the connection type - cable or DSL,
and enter a username and password as needed, save settings, and the router
may restart.

That's it. You should now have internet access on both systems. Neither
system has to be on for the internet connection to be active.

If you don't want any sort of sharing, you are now done, though you may need
to adjust firewalls on the PCs to allow traffic through the router.

Thank you all for speedy replies.
A $ 25 supportcall resulted in the supposition that the router is defect /
or cant configured it because there are two firewalls.
I have returned the router to store and bought another one, a Jensen brand
with a cd included and FREE SUPPORT FOR THREE MONTHS ! High expectations
for my attempt tomorrow.

When you set it up, you can safely confirm that the systems get IP addresses
by simply not connecting the router to the modem. This will let you
confirm that any firewalls on the PCs aren't in the way. If you can get
to the router configuration page, the PC is set up properly.

You can then connect the router and modem, and configure the router's login
as normal.

END OF STORY :

The Jensen free supportcall solved the problem :

Launch browser, replace URL with 192.168.1.1
When prompted for username : admin, password : admin, save password, Ok
On the meny, click Status, the IP address said PPPoe which is wrong (for my
ISP)
Click network and click WAN
WAN connection type says PPPoe, change this to Dynamic IP, then save.
No need to do this on the other machine, internet there worked like a charm.
Happiness is restored. I'm looking forward to pretend I'm not itching to
tell my wife.
