Router and DSL modem power

If I remove the power from my wireless router, will I loose the custom
settings I have made? I'm thinking of the SSID and key particularly.
Generally the router will remain powered at all times but occasionally,
more often than I would like, we loose power here. Also, I would like
to be able to turn power off when we go away for more than a day or two.

Likewise, how about the DSL modem?

Shouldn't have any effect. I occasionally power down (and then power up)
both my router and my cable modem when my ISP is having problems and I need
to re-establish a connection.
 
The router has a special computer chip (known possibility as EEPROM) which
would store all your personal settings. However, I would also recommend
that you write down your settings as a backup for when the router will fail
(you never know?).

Doesn't that suggest there is a finite limit to the number of times you
can change the settings, or am I getting that confused with 'flash
memory'?

How many time will you setting the configuration up? Once, twice ?? Not
more than 1000???

Flash memory and EEPROM are not the same! Flash is designed to physically
move from one unit to another. EEPROM does not move from unit to unit.

No, I doubt it but will be very careful not to exceed that. :)

Yes all the settings revert to the default. Including password and
user name and WEP settings. It is always (at least with Cableone)
necessary to re set the router if you re cyle the modem.

If you are truly worried that "loose" power could cause problems,
might I suggest you tighten the power down? That might resolve your
worries.

No, No. That was not my worry and I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear.
When we leave home for a few days, I power down the complete system.
And more often than I care to admit, I move things around and that
requires unplugging the power connection.

My real worry is the loss of power from the street. For some reason
beyond me, we have that problem here more than any neighborhood we have
ever lived in.

Ye Gods. I can't believe I did that! Thank you for the subtle
correction to my grammar.
 
You can check the manufacturers web site but as far as I know routers
use Nonvolitile memory to store settings so lose of power does not
return the settings to some default state. You may also be able to back
up settings to disk and reload them if lost. DSL modems I don't know
about but Cable and telephone modems are usually set from the computer
or the router if necessary.
