RootDirectory Limit for Presentation CD

Can someone tell me if there is a limit to the number of files that can
be within the root directory of a CD to support a presentation?
 
I seem to recall 256 slots, at about 4 slots per file name, therefore 64
files, but can't swear to it. That might be older technology and it might
be up to 128 or 256 files now. How many do you have?

About 1000 files...
