Root domain on its own server?

If I decide to create a new active directory structure such as:

cityname.companyname.com

where companyname.com is my company's external domain name, what is
considered "best practice" for the actual hardware? I mean, should I have a
separate DC for the root or doesn't it matter?

My mind is starting to fog over with active directory...

Mark,

You do not need to have an empty root. You may if you so choose. I am not
sure that I understand your question, though. If you have any domain then
you need hardware for it. You need at least one Domain Controller for each
domain. Better would be two! However, that all depends on a few things.

Please note that you can have 'companyname.com' for the entire company. If
you have offices located in several cities then you could simply set up
Sites in the Active Directory Sites and Services MMC, create a Subnet and
then associate that Subnet with the appropriate Site.

For example, if you have the Head Quarters in Phoenix, AZ and an office in
Tempe, AZ and Minneapolis, MN and Eugene, OR and Roanoke, VA instead of
setting up a domain for each city ( which would probably be a child domain
of the HQ ) you simply create a Site for each city.

Why would you want to have a domain for each city? This is more of an NT
4.0 thing. We do not really need to do this in WIN2000.

Thanks for the info. I am setting up a test network and will get this all
straightened out in my head before the actual upgrade...

Thanks,
Mark :-)

Mark,

This is probably the best way to do things: in a test environment. Users
typically do not like not being able to work while we learn how to do
things!

If you have any questions please post them and we will help you.

Tell me about it! I have my test network right now!

Thanks,
Mark
