root dc is pinging other computers

Is there any reason other than a virus/worm/trojan for a
Windows 2000 forest root domain controller to constantly
ping other computers in the domain? (I only have one
domain). Every few seconds our dc is pinging various
computers on the network. I've scanned several times for
viruses with no result.

Do a network trace on the machine and see what kind of traffic is coming off of it. If it pings and then after the echo
response goes back to the same machine for some more stuff, figure out what that other stuff is and it will tell you if
it is a virus or something else. Depending on what services are running on a DC, there could be valid reasons for it
contacting hosts.
