Bill

hello

I have named my win2k AD sample.abc.com. My registerd domain name is
www.abc.com. My Webpage and DNS is hosted by a hosting company. My
internal DNS is working except I can only get to the company website
by IP using an IE browser.

Should I have named my AD sample.abc.local or something other than
..com? and is there a way to fix this.

Also my internal DNS zone is abc.com. Should I change that to zone1?

thank you .. Bill

Register your domain name and use that. Don't try and bandage up an error
you have now. Fix it and move forward. Sorry I couldn't understand what
you are trying to explain.

Bill-

This is an easy fix. Just add a new host record to your DNS zone abc.com
for WWW and point it to the IP address. The problem you have is that your
internal DNS server is resolving all of your abc.com queries but your WWW is
hosted externally. So now you need an internal DNS entry pointing to the
external IP address and you will be fine.

Bill,

Typically what you would need to do is to create an A Record ( or Host
Record ) called 'www' - without the quotes - and enter the public IP address
of your web site....

There are some who would suggest that you should not name your internal DNS
Domain name the same as your external DNS name ( ex, abc.com is your
external DNS name while abc.local is your internal DNS name ) just as there
are others who will suggest that you should have no problems doing this. I
personally have supported many many environments which have the same
internal as external DNS name. I have also set up environments using
mycompany.local for the internal DNS name whereas the 'Registered' DNS name
is mycompany.com.

The zone needs to have the same name as your internal DNS name ( IIRC ).

Just make sure that all of your DCs and workstations point only to your
INTERNAL DNS Server(s).

Yes, this is to be expected. As others have said it is an easy fix.
You just need an A record in your internal DNS, as they say.

.com? and is there a way to fix this.
You have two choices. One is to take the easy fix, which means that
you will have manually keep your external DNS and internal DNS in sync
with respect to your externally accessible machines from now on. That
should not be too big a deal. The second is to, essentially, rebuild
your AD from scratch. It really depends how much work that would be as
to whether it is worth it or not.
Also my internal DNS zone is abc.com. Should I change that to zone1?
That would mean rebuilding the Domain, also a single level Domain Name
is not a good idea. If you meant "should I change it to zone1.abc.com"
that would also require a rebuild.

All in all, I'd leave things as they are, unless you are sure that
you'd prefer it another way.

Cheers,

Cliff
