This probably isn't of much interest to most of you but it is to me.
Apart from being a definite old fart I always liked the Rolling Stones, always preferred them to the Beatles.
Here's a link to the story that prompted me to start this thread: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/sussex/8229478.stm
On the night Brian Jones was found dead I was sitting alone in a second storey office in Fleet Street working as a trainee news reporter, manning the newsdesk in the small hours. My job was to monitor certain sources, including the police radio frequencies, and try and pick up news.
Must have been around 4am I heard a signal from police saying something like 'I think we've got one here Guv, one of those Rolling Stones is dead, we've just pulled him out of his swimming pool'
My ears pricked up, I phoned two police contacts we had on our payroll and it was confirmed Brian Jones was indeed brown bread. I immediately phoned all six or seven National Newspapers and thus gained copyright exclusivity for the news agency I was working for.
I felt rather chuffed, if not a little sad that the geezer who played Sitar in 'Paint It Black' was deceased.
I must have made my boss lots of money on that one but all he ever did was travel up from his office in Kingston-Upon-Thames to Fleet Street and shake my hand and thank me. I was earning £6.00 a week at the time. Plus £1.50 expenses I hasten to add
So there you go, new evidence eh? I always thought his death was iffy, odd how the police never picked up on it at the time, I guess the death of one more rich pop music drug fiend was no loss to them at the time.
Maybe. Maybe not. Who knows?
