I have a network of around 500 users, all setup in active directory with
roaming profiles. I am noticing that when I create a new user, log into a
workstation and log out, the profile directory is being created, but no
folders are being created. Waiting about a half hour, the directories then
seem to get created. Very interesting?

Also, established profiles that exist on the server are not being updated
when users log off.

I have a 100% 2000 environment with 8 2000 Servers, 3 Domain Controllers,
and my machines are all standard 2000 loaded from RIS.

Any help would be appreciated. I will be happy to provide more information
if needed.

Assuming you're storing the pofiles in a central location,
the user-level folders are automatically created when you
create the user in AD. If you're manually creating (I
sure hope not with 500 users; but you didn't mention
anything about ADSI or LDIFDE) the users, you even get a
message box that pops up everytime the user's folder is
created.

True, when you first create the account and roaming
profile, only an empty folder is created. But after a
user logs on and off for the first time from a client
workstation, the sub folders are immediately added to the
profile share. You can watch this from the server as it
happens (you may need to F5 every now and again but I
watched this happen just yesterday in helping fix a
horribly corrupted profile).

If you're having issues with profiles across your
enterprise, it may not be an AD problem... perhaps more of
a communication problem?! Are you on a LAN or WAN?
Internet or just local traffic? Are you using any filters
on your router? Are there any AD or DNS errors in the
system log; that can slow down updating established
profiles (found this out the hard way).

Chris,

Thanks for the reply.

I am talking only about Profile directory, not home directories. I
understand home direcrtories get created as soon as you create the account,
however I am only talking about profiles.

When we create an account and log into and then out of a workstation, the
profile is not saving up, only the directory. It will 'save your personal
settings' and then go back to the logon screen, but doesnt save anything up.

We are experiencing no DNS or AD errors in our logs, have a GB backend for
our servers, and a solid 100MB switched environment for our workstations. I
once used a user profile level debugger once for a similar issue. It turned
on extra logging so we could see exactly what was trying to be saved up.
Have you heard of this debug switch?

Thanks for the help!
