What can be done to speed up log-in times when using roaming profiles?

Keep the profiles small - redirect My Documents to the users' home
directories on the server
Don't let users store files on the desktop
Lock down switch ports & workstation & server NICs at 100Mb/full duplex

How do you insure that NIC's are locked down at 100mb/full duplex? Is
this a switch setting or a local machine setting?

Both, if the switch is managed.
Note - I've had problems with Dell Powerconnect switches - they seem to
prefer autosense and don't mess up when you use it. With all other switches,
I've locked stuff down tight at 100/full there and on the clients/servers
(in their NIC properties, advanced tab) and it works a treat.

I'll give that a shot and see how it works. I seem to have REALLY slow
response from the Dell boxes connected to the LAN. Others seem to run
reasonably well but we have LOTS of room on these cables so there's NO
reason we can't just push 100/full on these cards.

I have also found that making the domain server first in your list of DNS servers helps as well -- tremendously! Do this in your DHCP setup or individually on each machine's TCP/IP settings for DNS.
