Roaming Profile for user stops working

I run a small windows 2000 network with a mixture of desktop and laptop
users that have roaming profiles. One user's profile has suddenly
stopped working.

When he logs in, the default profile is copied to his machine. I can
see his (actual) profile data on the server but it will not come down,
no matter what machine he logs into.

On his machine, under User Profiles (My Computer Properties // Advanced
// User Profiles // Settings his profile type (his actual profile) is
listed under "status" as "Backup". the one he's logged into is listed
as "temp". I cannot access the radio button to change it back to
roaming. I cannot for the life of me, figure out why this happened.

I enabled profile logging in the registry, but that information is a
huge amount of data to digest- and frankly, it's a bit beyond me. I
can see that something is wrong with this user's profile- when
comparing it to one that logs in normally but other than that, this log
does not help me.

I'm going to rebuild this guys profile from scratch- but I can't help
but wonder if there is not some easier solution.

I googled and looked on MS's website- but can't seem to find any
answers.

I'd rebuild his profile, too. Seems easiest.

Check for event log errors (userenv) and download/install the User Profile
Hive Cleanup Utility from MS on all computers....
