I hope that someone can help me regarding a strange problem with Rise of
Nations: Gold Edition. During play, my PC may just suddenly power-down. I'm
using Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2 and all updates as shown in Windows
Update. I also followed the instructions in KB303032, "Games: The game stops
responding or quits unexpectedly".

The same issue occurs when I tried to play the game under a separate
partition installation of Windows XP with no other software installed, as
well as Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4 and all Windows updates.

I all cases I did an online update of the game.

Interestingly, the same issue occurs with the trial edition of Rise of
Nations: Rise of Legends.

Please help as this problem drives me crazy.

Hi Gerbus,

Hardware issues can cause freezing, black screens and other
errors. Also, your drivers should always be kept up to date.

Try the following steps one at a time to try and resolve the issue.
I hope this helps. Please post back if you have any questions! :-)

1. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

2. Dust your fans, vents and components using a 1/4" paintbrush
and a hose vacuum. Use compressed air for hard to reach places.
Set a housefan to blow cold air into your case to expose an over-
heating issue.. If it works add more fans or replace defective ones.
Use this Motherboard Monitor Utility: http://mbm.livewiredev.com

3. A faulty power supply can cause STOP errors, random reboots,
and black screen lockups. One way to test for that is to check the
wattage sticker on your power supply and then calculate your need
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ (Min. 350 for gaming)

4. Test your RAM using: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Hi all,
I’ve the same problem with Rise of Legends as posted above. I have no
trouble with RoN Thrones and Patriots, I also have several other games that
push my system to the absolute edge and I have Zero problems with them (EQ2
for example)

I have a machine that exceeds the minimum requirements, AMD XP2600, 1.5GB
RAM, 7200 EIDE drive, ATI X800 Pro. Not the latest most cutting edge
machine, but like I said, it works with other more demanding games.

I am running the game at its lowest settings and can’t get the darn thing to
stay running. Best I have gotten so far is about 20 minutes or so.

I have followed the same KB Article as posted above, I have all the latest
drivers, I have switched from ATI to nVidia chipsets for my video and have
the same exact issue. Hardware testing is all pass, no viruses found, no
spyware.

What next?

Hi Mojo,

Have you tried reinstalling the game using a new account with
administrator priviledges? It's possible your current installation
has become corrupt for some reason. Don't forget to update!

When you say the PC "powers down", do you mean it seems to go into suspend
mode?
Does it wake up if you press either the "Windows key" on the keyboard, or
Ctrl+Alt+Del ?
If it wakes up, is the game still running? That is, does it appear on the
StartBar?

You are mentioning the demo has the same problem. Have you un-installed
the demo before you installed the full version? I would suggest to
un-install the full version, check your game folder if anything remains
and delete manually if required. Clean your temp folder, restart your
computer and the re-install and update.
