About the only thing I know is that I have the retail copy and it lists the
version on the main menu as version 0.0604.2001.0000.13.0, when I attempt the
autopatch it fails on update 7 of 11 squawking about an invalid retail patch,
and when I tried downloading version 1.3 from the Microsoft website, it
refuses to acknowledge that the game is even installed. Is there a thing I
can do outside of the uninstall/reinstall/sacrifice a chicken and hope it
works dance?

Further update: autopatcher displays the message below.

"Invalid patch: RETAIL-0608.0901.0002-0610.160.0000.RTP" and forces me to
return to the main menu.

Hi DerImpresario,

Your fastest path towards a solution may be as follows ...
Here's how to properly install or reinstall a game (and patch):

Step A: In Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs, delete the game and then
the game's folder especially if you previously experienced problems
with a patch, or if you installed the Trial, Mods, NO CD patches, etc.

Step B: Click Start to Search/Find your game. Many times there are two installs
of the same game on a system and the patch installs to the wrong one. Also if you
installed a Trial version of the game, this could be causing a conflict.. Uninstall it
and delete the folder.

Step C: Reboot your computer, Install and Run Regcleaner and if it finds any
stray registry keys for the game, delete them., and re-install the game.
Regcleaner Download: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html

Step D: Play a single player game, using an administrators account if necessary.

Step E: Download new game patches or mods in case the old ones are corrupt.
Double click the patch/mod to install it. If it's a .zip file, unzip it into the
game's folder and follow the instruction in it's readme.txt file.

Step F: Reboot your computer, verify that your game is working properly, and
re-enable any programs that you disabled using the method in Step A.

Helpful, but it still doesn't solve the patch problem. The biggest issue
facing patching for me right now is the extreme difficulty I am having in
locating files for the game outside of the auto-patcher. While I'm
appreciative of the advice, until I find a feasible manual option, I'm rather
stuck right now.

this might work....

-Go to http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EUCHDI36
-Type in the required 3 letters and click download.
-Wait for the free timer to count down then click it to download the file.
-Extract the file so the files in the patch folder (inside the zip file) are placed in the games' patch folder. This is normally located at "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Rise of Legends\Patches".
-Overwrite any files currently in that folder.
-Open notepad.
-Copy & Paste the following text EXACTLY including "CODE":

CODE

patch.exe patches\RETAIL-0604.1602-0604.2001.RTP
patch.exe patches\RETAIL-0604.2001.0000-0605.0101.0100.RTP
patch.exe patches\RETAIL-0605.0101.0000-0605.1701.0000.RTP
patch.exe patches\RETAIL-0605.1701.0000-0605.1701.0100.RTP
patch.exe patches\RETAIL-0605.2403.0001-0606.1401.0000.RTP
patch.exe patches\RETAIL-0606.1401.0000-0606.1401.0001.RTP
patch.exe patches\RETAIL-0606.1401.0001-0606.1401.0002.RTP
patch.exe patches\RETAIL-0606.1401.0002-0608.0901.0000.RTP
patch.exe patches\RETAIL-0608.0901.0002-0610.1601.0000.RTP
patch.exe patches\RETAIL-0610.1601.0000-0.0612.1201.0000.RTP
patch.exe patches\RETAIL-0610.1601.0000-0610.1601.0100.RTP
patch.exe patches\RETAIL-0612.1201.0000-0.0704.1001.0000.RTP

-Go to Save As.
-Delete anything in the file name box.
-Use the "File Type" drop down box to choose "All Files".
-Put in "PatchApply.bat" for the File Name to avoid confusion between the games' normal patch executable.
-Save it in the main game folder "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Rise of Legends\"
-Run the newly saved "PatchApply.bat" file.

this didnt work for me but it might for you =P. Also another way (another forum i tried) delete all files in patch (located in microsoft games rise of legends) and restart comp might take a couple trys i still havnt goten mine fixed yet but those seem to work for alot of others

Greetings,

I am having a similar issue with my recent installation of Rise of Legends.
The only difference is that mine fails at
RETAIL-0610.1601.0000-0612.1201.0000.RTP

Hi Gruntus,

The following applies to most games in general, and not just to the games that
may be listed in the KB Article refered to in this post.

SYMPTOMS:

When you start or play any one of the games that is listed in the "Applies to" section, you may experience one or more of the
following symptoms:

..The game stops responding.
..The game quits unexpectedly.
..The computer restarts unexpectedly.
..The game encounters an error and needs to close

Additionally, you may receive the following error message after you receive the Gathering Exception Data dialog box:
<Game Name>has encountered a problem and needs to close.

RESOLUTION:

Method 1: Restart your computer by using a clean boot procedure
Method 2: Remove and Reinstall the Game
Method 3: Adjust graphics hardware acceleration
Method 4: Disable AGP Texturing in the DirectX Diagnostic tool
Method 5: Temporarily disable the sound card in Windows
Method 6: Lower sound acceleration
Method 7 : Download and install the most recent version of DirectX
Method 8: Update your video driver
Method 9: Update your sound driver
Method 10: Scan your computer for viruses
Method 11: Remove spyware
Method 12: Install the latest VIA chipset drivers
Method 13: Create a new user account in Windows XP
Method 14: Change the compatibility setting

G'day,

Thanks for the information provided. I will attempt those items where
appropriate to see if this makes any difference. The only question that I
have is that the information below appears to relate more to application
errors, rather than updating errors.

P.S. Is there any reason why the autoupdater won't at least patch up the
versions that it is able to download & verify?

Hi Gruntus,

One reason could be that you don't have the same priviledges
on the account that you are playing the game with as you do on
the account that you installed the game with. Check to be sure
that you are able to patch the game with the Administrator account.

Unfortunately, the account I installed the game with and the account I update

Does the "Invalid Patch" message actually mean anything, or is this a
generic message that means 1 of 100 things may have occurred?

Hi Gruntus,

Does the "Invalid Patch" mesage actually mean anything? Yes, it does...
To keep the download size to a minimum, the Rise of Nations updates
are mostly a delta update. A delta update contains the differences that
are found between newly versioned and original files. If the installed
files have become damaged or modified before the update, RON is
unable to successfully modify the file because the contents of the file
differ from the expected contents. To resolve this issue please visit:

I've reinstalled RoN:RoL several times, making sure that it is completely off
of my system. I still can't patch this game, due to the fact that when the
updater starts, it says that an old file cannot be found, but one with the
same name, and it doesn't complete the patch process. What do I do about
this? I've tried rerunning the autopatcher several times, and I've even
downloaded external sources of the patches from a couple of different sites.
