Hola,

Ahhh, the joys of RIS,

Dell has once again made some tweeks to their hardware and tossed me a curve
I wasn't ready for.

We run a W2k RIS server and deploy XP images off it.

As of the latest round of GX270's with 2.8Ghz HT CPUs and above when RIS
gets to the step that would start transferring files we BSOD with the
following:

session3_initialization_failed

It doesn't matter what NIC, if I use a RBFG or not, HT enabled or disabled
(tried both)

Any ideas? and feel free to ask more questions if you think you have a hunch

I couldn't find much on this...

Do these machines have Serial ATA drives?

Will they RIS with a Win2K image?

Scott,

nope, they won't RIS at all with the W2K server, at least so far

However we have an lab environment and it runs W2k3 and they RIS
there..(this is actually on a slower more HW limited server, but it IS
running 2K3 as a testbed)

I found the same references you appear to have on the SATA connections.

I have a suspicion Dell has either tweeked the motherboard, or these new
processors are just too fast for the older RIS kernel..

The 2.4/2.6Ghz machines without HT seem to RIS fine in both environments
(and to reaffirm I've tried HT enabled and disabled)

I'm still running a few more tests such as trying a machine already imaged
on 2K3 RIS and then reimaging in the production 2k environment.

ahhh RIS it's job security however

<mutter mutter>

It's something broken on the RIS server...

all our XP images are currently dead.. the images can be copied to the LAB
and run fine there..

I'll reply if I find anything

Diane

Good luck, Diane.

I recently had to rebuild a RIS server at our enterprise... sucks.
