RIS Problem

This seems to be a common theme around here but I can't
quite find what I'm looking for in the other threads.
I've set up RIS on a server and everything seems to be
fine there. When a try to boot a client I get this
error 'no boot filename rec'd.' Where should I begin my
search for problems/misconfigurations?

Hi Evan,

-Are you RISing across routers? If so, verify DHCP helper address (relay)
is configured in the routers. Is spanning tree is enabled?
-VLANS? Are ACLs in place? Turn them off for the testing.
-Do machines on the local subnet RIS ok? (same subnet as RIS server)
-Do the problem machines get IP addresses from DHCP? Check that those
addresses are not already in use by another device on the network (static
entry).
-Do just some client machines have trouble or all?
-On the RIS server, Start>run>RISETUP -check>OK.
-RIS server authorized?
-RIS Server on a DC? RIS Server on DHCP Server?
-Make sure the Respond to client computer requesting service setting is
checked in the properties of the RIS server.
-If the Do not respond to unknown client computers setting in the properties
of the RIS server is checked, the server only answers clients with computer
account objects in Active Directory.

No I'm not RISing accross any routers
The macine I'm trying to RIS is on the same subnet as the
RIS server. The RIS server is in the same subnet as the
DHCP server
I've not yet been successful setting up a client, so I
would say that all clients have trouble.
Risetup -check came back OK
'Respond to computers .....' is checked

When trying to boot from the PXE boot floppy or by pushing
F12 to get a network boot It gets as far as
attempting/querrying the DHCP server. I'm not sure if it
actually ever gets an address. After 30sec or so it
returns the error. "exiting PXE boot rom" "PXE-E53: No
boot Filename Received." Is there a way to check to see
if it has indeed been assigned an address?

the DHCP srv will show a record of the address & computer name
did you see what the RIS error log has ?

Are you sure the RIS server is authorized? Open the DHCP snapin and
authorize it again by IP address.

Jon is correct that you can look at the DHCP server for that subnet and see
if an IP address was given out. Ping that address to see if the address is
already in use on the network.

Make sure the Respond to client computer requesting service setting is
checked in the properties of the RIS server.

Make sure the Do not respond to unknown client computers is unchecked.

Are you using 3Com nics?
