RIS Image location

Can a RIS image be located on a different machine than the one running RIS? I've only found that the image must be located on an NTFS drive & that all the liturature I've seen so far refer to locating images on 'a drive on the RIS server...'.
 
The drive where RIS is installed also makes use of the SIS (single instance
storage) service, which cuts down on the volume of data stored when you have
several images.

This means the drive has to be local to the RIS server.
