I have my windows 2000 RIS setup on my DHCP server

I am getting a error " PXE-E53: No Boot filename recieved". Earlier This setup was working fine. But suddenly I am getting this error. When I check the event viewer on the RIS server I see the event from BINLSVC stating "The BINL service encountered an error while attempting to connect to the directory service. The error code is in the record data.

I have enabled the debugging for BINL service and the log file shows as

Looks like the client cannot locate the RIS Server...or that the tftp
directory on the server is missing

Make sure the RIS Server is authorized...

Check that the RIS services are running (BINL, TFTP and the Groveler
service)

You may also try run risetup -check

Can anyone help me

Johan

I have already tried running risetup - check. But this check does not show any problem. This check shows all that RIS services are running properly

What else do I need to check

Is it a multihomed server? Or do you have multiple IP addresses on the
NIC?

All NICs must have an active scope when using RIS on a multihomed
server

Have you tried to unathorize and then authorize again?

Do you have any other PXE services like ADS or IP Phone?

Do you have clients on other VLANs (behind a router)?

I suggest you start Network Monitor on the server and actually finds
out what is going over the wire...

Johan

We do have IP Phones in our network. But RIS was working even in this environment. I am not clear how IP phones can affect RIS service

If I have to monitor the Wire.. What is that I should look for

Can you please help me

Thanks & Regard

Yuvaraj G

Sometimes the IP Phone systems are using the same DHCP options (66 or
67) as DHCP and RIS is using...

Have you enabled the "do not respond to unknown client computers"
checkbox on the RIS server?

Have you checked the event logs (system and application) for errors on
DHCP, DNS, RIS (BINLSVC) and Active Directory?

Regarding monitoring you should look for the traffic between client
and DHCP and RIS Server . it should be in this order..

1. DHCP Discover on port 67

2. DHCP Offer on port 68 (includes the ip of dhcp server)

3. DHCP Request on Installation Server port 67

4. DHCP Ack reply on port 68, this ack should include Server Host Name
(FQDN) and the bootfile name (OSChooser/i386/startrom.com)

5. TFTP request on port 69 (startrom.com)

FURTHER info
Similar problem
RIS broken
using
dumb hub. w2003 enteprise edition as AD, RIS, DHCP, DNS server and BRAND new
supported client BOTH on same dumb 100mb hu
behind a firewall
Checked the dhcp mmc. verified my server was authorized by ip. ALSO deleted, reauthorized, no effect
Get same error PXE-E51, no dhcp/or proxy dhcp offers were received
HOWEVER this client HAS received the offer, an IP address, and gotten as far as the F12,
and screen sequences in the past, so I KNOW this built in NIC is supported

I even tried turning off the other dhcp server (different address range), from my firewall, nothing (rebooted ris/server to see if did anything, nope
even tried to authorize the fw server in the dhcp mmc snap in, rebooted, nothing changed
GETTING DESPERATE to deploy servers, PLEASE help me! I;m desperate, AND I'm an OEM!!!

Found the Groveler service under System (single instance storage.) REALLy. SO user friendly
Might as well go to *nix
Yes, I turned on BINL debugging (full mode) on
STILL doesnt show anything

OK.... I am in a total state of disbelief

....remember..
I said
dumb hub.on hub was both w2003 enterprise server. brand new shuttle ss-g51,
and (didn't say, but) a realtek RTL8139 based (built-in)
100mb ethernet nic. Remember I verified all svces were up, got NO responses, even went as far as staritng network monitor. didnt see a thing

Oh well
I started to give up and install the RBFG (remote boot floppy generator...
lo, and behold, it took, gave me a F12 prompt, and worked
I then took out the floppy drive, did it again, and it STILL WORKED

WTF IS THIS, can someone really explain this??

but bottom line is , it still works again
