RIS: BINLSVC Event 1101 / Parameter "LegacyNIC"

Our Windows XPSP1a Image on our RIS Server that once worked stopped working:
The RIS Client stoops either at the beginning with an error (No supported
Network card..) in the Textmode setup, or later during the device detection
phase. In the application event log of the RIS Server, we have an event with
Event Source: BINLSVC, Event ID: 1101, Description: An error occurred during
parsing of an INF file netclass.inf in the
given section Manufacturer.

There is only the orginal netclass.inf file in the i386 folder of the XP
Image, no netcalss.inf in the $oem$ folder.

What I have done so far is to remove the "LegacyNIC = 1" Line in the
unattended section of the sif file, and I could install a RIS Client without
error two times in a row.

My questions:
- Whats the cause of this problem and how can it be solved ?
- Whats the meaning and purpose of the "LegacyNIC = 1" Parameter in the sif
file? There is no documentation from Microsoft available.

Thanks in advance for any help
Franz

Acquire the KB 823658 hotfix from PSS (solves problem parsing
..inf-files)

necessary drivers for your network adapter" error message during the
text-mode part of Setup when you deploy an operating system image by

Hi Franz,

I'm having the same problem as you describe below. I wonder, have
you managed to resolve this issue yet?

I have read on other threads that administrators will RIS working
successfully also see the netclass.inf error message. Have you sorted
this out yet?

One other question in connection with the .sif file, how have you got
the line written with spaces between the key and the comment?
Additionally, do you have quotes surrounding the key, for example:

OemPnpDriversPath = Drivers\Nic

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,

Justin.

Hi Justin,

I looked through a few of my working RIS images and found the sif to be
modified like this:

Oempnpdriverspath = "\Drivers\nic\"

or

Oempnpdriverspath = \Drivers\broadcom

They both work.

- Thank you for KB 823658. I have seen this article, and this problem can
also solved with a free download from Intel (without the complicated
Microsoft procedure for obtaining Hotfixes) at
http://support.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-000023-prd38.htm.

- But I really like to know an explication of the parameter LegacyNIC = 1 in
the sif file!

- The REAL problem we had: Our Dell Optiplex GX470 Workstations have a BIOS
Setting "Hyperthreading" that is set to ON by default. With this setting,
the Workstation RIS installation stops in the device detection phase two out
of three times! When Hyperthreading is turned off in the BIOS, workstation
RIS Setup works fine every time!
