RIS across VPN's

Is it possible to use a ris server in another VPN. I have
a ris server setup and it will only serve requests from
workstations in the same VPN. I know I could setup RIS to
replicate to another RIS server but I would rather avoid
doing this I think it's unnecessary seeing it's all on a
local LAN and I don't want to generate any unnecessary
traffic.

Thanks

One way is to configure IP helper on the routers...
PXE Clients Do Not Receive an IP Address from a DHCP Server Across a
Router

DHCP allows you to configure options 60, 66, and 67 for directing
PXE-enabled clients to a RIS server without having to update routers
with the IP address of the RIS server.

In same cases that will fail, see this article:
Using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Options 60, 66, 67 to Direct
PXE Clients to RIS Servers May Fail

The client uses information from the DCHP server in order to locate a
RIS server. You can create differerent scopes with different options
(not sure if you can use a Microsoft DHCP for this though). I have
used a ISC DHCP Server running on a Solaris server in order to direct
different clients to different RIS Servers (the options is call
"Next-Server")

Great article on

Perhaps you will need to add scope options to the DHCP the VPC clients
receive and\or set up your RAS server that hosts the VPN connections to name
DHCP helper addresses for *both* the DHCP server and the RIS server's ip
addresses. I usually steer people clear of the DHCP options but you may
need to try it. I'd first start with the helper addresses and let port 4011
pass through any firewall or router that may block a port.

Is your RIS server multihomed with multiple nics or virtual ips? Make sure
you authorize each ip address in the DHCP snap in (not just the computer
name).
