ripping a portion of a track

How do you rip a portion of a track. I need to create a music and sound
effects cd for a play I am producing.
 
The below is an app that will let you trim it in front or off the end.
Take a look. It only works on MP3s and WAV files. There are many
more free and shareware apps on the web by doing a Google search.

I'd say: first rip the whole, then "crop" it to your selection.
(This might appear as one operation.)
