rip dvd's

Hi.
i want to rip dvd's to my harddrive , could someone please
tell me what is the best programme to use..and what format
would you use. I thought avi, but a lot of files on the
web are divx. is there a great difference.?
I've tried to rip a number of discs using moviejack but
half way through it says " error". tried different
discs but same problem.
any help would be great
