On a HP/Compaq nx7000, the right-hand mouse button
suddenly ceased fuinctioning on the "Start" menus after
they have been opened. IOW, after I click start, and the
menu opens, the right hand mouse button doesn't function
when I click on a function or an app in the open menu.
It fnctions perfectly in all other applications.

I have installed all Windows XP updates, and all driver
updates. I have tried a "Restore" back to the date I
purchased the machine.

ANybody got any ideas?

If the right button only fails to work properly under the start menu or in
the explorer background window/task bar, I would rule out hardware/driver
issues and focus on Start menu settings.

1. Focus on the start menu customization features.
Right click on the Start menu, select properties -> start menu ->
customize -> advanced
Look for the setting for "enable drag and drop" . If this is unchecked, it
may disable right clicking and drag/drop.

2. Look in the registry for keys that you or a group policy provider may
have set.

If there is a value set for "nodragdrop", that will have similar
concequences as #1 also. Additional details on this key are available in the
Group Policy Templates.

Hope this helps
