I have a problem with a computer. Every time I right click, it locks the
computer and you can not do anything else. In order for me to continue
working, I have to used the task bar and kill explorer and restart explorer
again. This also happens when trying to copy a folder. Can any one suggest
anything on this???

Thanks

Hi Luis,

When you right-click a file or folder in Windows Explorer, the CPU usage
goes to 100 percent while the shortcut menu is displayed. CPU usage returns
to the correct level when the shortcut menu is closed.

Turn off the transition effects for menus and ToolTips. To do this, follow
these steps:
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click Display, and then click the Appearance tab.
On the Appearance tab, click Effects.
In the Effects dialog box, click to clear the Use the following transition
effect for menus and tooltips check box, and then click OK two times.

Folder in Windows Explorer

Ramesh, unfortunatelly, it did not work. When I pressed the right click of
the mouse, it just hangs, it does nothing. The fix you suggested is for
"Temporary Decline", mine is permanent. One thing I noticed, was the
Explorer runs about 25K.
Thanks for your response.

Then, this problem may be due to the context menus. For which file tyoe you
are experiencing the error. Post the registry backup of the folder registry

Ramesh, is it possible the number of fonts installed in the computer? This
particular user has approximatelly 1290 fonts installed. I have searched
every where, where it can say the limit of fonts that can be installed.
(someone else suggested this). What do you think?

The hangs primarily happens when trying to access properties for a folder,
etc. When I try at the IE icon on the desktop, it works fine.

Thanks

This may not be related to Fonts, but the registry association for folders
(as it happens only to folders). there is an incorrect context menu handler
associated with the folder registry key.

Download the folder registry association fix from here:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/folder_reg.zip

** Before using the above fix, try this **
Click Start | Run | Regedit
Goto this location:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder]
Click File | Export | Selected branch and save it as a .reg file as a
backup.

Now, delete the key "Folder".
Close the registry editor

Double-click the folder association fix downloaded and extract the .reg file
to desktop and double-click the file
Restart.

Laguilar,

Click Start | Run | MSConfig | Startup | Disable ALL
Disable WinVNC especially as it is taking more CPU time and memory usage is
high. Observe the difference.

Ramesh,

OK, this is what I have done. I'm running out of options, and I would hate
to redo this computer.

I deleted approximately 1000 fonts from the computer, well, I really moved
it to another folder. But, now only 410 fonts are registered.

I also did what you suggested at the registry. This is where is gets really
good.

I did work as soon as I boot up the computer, but, after 2 minutes, it
locked again. I'm attaching a picture of the Task Manager with all the
processes. I hope that you can help me. Thank you in advance.
